Homemade Taco Seasoning

I used to always buy the seasoning packets at the store when I made tacos. What we don’t realize is, most of us have all the spices we need to make our own! When you make your own taco seasoning you know exactly what is in it and you can control the sodium level.

You add all the spices to a jar and shake it up! So easy and it only takes minutes. What I love about this recipe is that it can be easily doubled or tripled! As is, this seasoning recipe is enough for about 2 to 3 pounds of ground taco meat, depending on your taste. I designed this seasoning mixture to mimic the directions on the seasoning packets you buy. Meaning, you do the same steps. The corn starch is there to create a thick sauce in the taco meat after you add the water. If you don’t want to add corn starch, simply reduce the water you add to a couple tablespoons.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 5 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons corn starch
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric

Directions:

  1. Mix all the spices together in a jar. Screw the lid on and shake well. (This is enough seasoning for about 2 to 3 pounds of meat, depending on taste.)
  2. Cook your ground beef/turkey/chicken fully in a skillet. I like to cook mine with a diced onion & bell pepper. Add 1/3 cup of water per pound to the ground beef and 3 tablespoons (or to your taste) of seasoning. Simmer until the mixture has thickened, and serve!
