Homemade Whipped Body Butter

I have spent years perfecting this body butter recipe. This recipe is creamy, moisturizing and not too oily on the skin. Even after washing your hands, they remain moisturized and soft. I make this all year round but it is especially useful during the winter months. My husband spends a lot of time outside in the winter, and his hands would get cracked and would even bleed because of the wind chill here in northern Illinois. Not only does this body butter protect his hands and face from getting chapped and cracked, but it also soothes areas that have become dry. It really is magical.

Okay, before we do anything else, lets talk about quality. What makes this body butter so amazing is the quality of ingredients we are using in the recipe. You might have seen shea butter and cocoa butter on the shelves in a drug store. They are liquid-y and have a scent to them. DO NOT use those products in this recipe. It will not work. We want organic, unrefined, raw shea butter, coconut oil and cocoa butter. They will be much different than you might be used to. This unrefined and raw cocoa butter is hard and it can be difficult to get out of the container. The shea butter is creamy, but not nearly as creamy as store bought lotions. Not only does this ensure a moisturizing product, but it is also much better for your body. There aren’t any additives or toxic ingredients in this recipe… it’s simply life changing.

First, you scrape out the ingredients, measure them, and place them in a small sauce pan.

Melt the mixture down to a liquid very slowly. I do this on low heat and stir often. You don’t want it to even come to a simmer. After it has melted remove it from the heat immediately and pour it into a heat safe bowl. I do not recommend trying to heat the ingredients in the microwave, as it will not only take longer but it will also heat it unevenly.

You will put the mixture into the refrigerator to chill for about 2 hours, or until it is firm but you can press your finger into it fairly easily. We don’t want it hard as a rock because then it would take much longer to whip.

A stand mixer or handheld electric mixer is crucial for getting this to whip up. You will scrape the mixture into your stand mixer and whip it for anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes. You want it to be nice and creamy. This could take longer if your mixture has cooled for longer than the two hours.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup organic unrefined raw shea butter
  • 3/4 cup organic unrefined raw cocoa butter
  • 1/4 cup organic coconut oil
  • 10-20 drops essential oil (optional)

Directions:

  1. In a sauce pan, melt down all of the ingredients except for the essential oil. Melt them down on low heat and stir frequently until completely melted. Once the mixture is melted, immediately remove from heat. Pour into a heat safe bowl and refrigerate for 2 hours, or until it is set up but still soft.
  2. Scrape mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer and add the essential oils of your choosing(leave in the bowl if using a hand held electric mixer), and with the whisk attachment, beat on high for 5 to 10 minutes. Scrape the bowl with a rubber spatula 2 to 3 times during this process to ensure it is evenly combined.
  3. Once it is whipped to your desired consistency, spoon it into a container. A little bit of this body butter goes a long way!!
